A Cup of Chai, A Second Chance – A Story from the Heart of Uttar Pradesh

Dear Friend,

In the narrow lanes of Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh — a town known for its perfumes and poetry — lives Savitri Devi, a 70-year-old woman with silver in her hair and strength in her soul.

Once the beloved tea-maker at her husband’s small railway-side stall, Savitri’s life turned upside down when he passed away. The cart was shut, the kettle cold. Her children, struggling with their own families, could offer little help. The house was silent, and the smell of chai — once a daily joy — had faded.

But with your support through Project Navjeevan, things began to change.

☕ Reigniting Hope—One Cup at a Time

Through a microgrant from Jeevan Jyoti Sewa Sanstha, Savitri restarted the tea stall in her husband’s memory. With her signature elaichi chai and mathri served on the side, her stall slowly became a favorite again.

Schoolteachers, rickshaw pullers, and even passersby began stopping by. They didn’t just come for tea—they came for her warm smile and familiar “Lo beta, ek cup garam chai pi lo.”

Now, she earns ₹300–₹400 a day. But more importantly, she has reclaimed her identity—not as someone to be helped, but someone who gives joy.

“Chai sirf paise ka zariya nahi hai… yeh meri pehchaan hai,”
("Tea isn’t just a source of income… it’s my identity."), she says proudly.
